Efficient use of insulin is key! Pre bolus, manage blood sugar effectively, and avoid high blood sugar that then requires tons of insulin to correct, while also avoiding tons of lows which require sugar to save
So glad you shared and doing better. I have 7 autoimmune including lupus sle and diabetes type 3. I had to not only deal with medication issues with blood sugars. I’ve been out of CREOn for malabsorption (dead pancreas) has made my sugars SO incredibly unpredictable BUT went in for pain management for epidural in my neck and couldn’t get bc my sugars were at 324! I was already wondering how to incorporate the huge shot of steroids. I’m rescheduled for another day. I too like you am a type A person. Will kidney surgeries and full on osteoporosis at 56. Will not be defeated. I do have my “I just don’t care anymore”moments. A lot of them actually. I have faith in god and a loving husband and 3 super humans (my 3 young adult children) who I want to stick around for. Without your videos and shout out to Jason C I was able to get it to 90% in just 6 mos. I had to do a lot of research. Docs did t do anything but write me insulin scripts. So thank you! And thanks for sharing the tough times too!
One book I recommend about “intense work & intense rest” is The Power Of Full Commitment
Thank you for sharing your vulnerabilities. And can I say something, as a T1 endurance athlete: running and training (when done well) only adds up to quality of life. I used to have all sorts of pains, and that was draining me. But when I adjusted my “running” (much more than simply working on the technique)…it just started to fuel my body and mind like nothing else. And racing became merely an excuse to enjoy life - because when I feed my body with the pure energy of training… I mean…mitochondria standing ovation, if you know what I mean. You will get back on your feet (without fractures), you will nail those ultras and thrive as a human and as a diabetic in the process. Promise that - am on that journey too. This episode hit home, and I send you a big hug!
thank you for sharing I've been there
So much of this resonates, not that I'm an ironman by any stretch, but the sheer despair one can feel with Type 1. When I was first diagnosed I remember my diabetes nurse saying to me "You might take a holiday from diabetes, but diabetes will _never_ take a holiday from you". Wishing you all the best.
You are a true hero and inspiration. Only someone very brave can share what you have shared with us.🙏🙏
I agree. 70% is waaaayy to low!! 54 yrs type 1 here.
Thank you Matt for your honesty, I really appreciate it. You are a perfectionist, that may not be a bad thing 🤔 but you make it tough for yourself. This subject needs to be talked about. Diabetic burnout in a scary place to be in like you I’ve been there 😢. Thank you for sharing your experience, it helps me not to feel soooo bad. However, we cannot give up. Kind Regards Sheryl.
I wish I stayed with my G6. The G7 is sooo hard to put on. My husband has to press that button on the G7 for me. He even says why didn't they test this before they started selling it. I wear it on my abdomen.
I just want to say thank you for sharing your vulnerabilities. I have a 3-year-old child with Type 1 diabetes, and when I see that you’ve lived for 5 years with 90%, I feel hope that as he grows up, his hormones will stabilize, the changes in his body won’t be as intense, and things will become more stable-especially considering that 80 is already a good result. I can currently achieve a maximum of 86% in range (with a range of 4-10) using all bells and whistles (AAPS + DASH + LIBRE3). Doctors say it’s a great result, but it never feels like enough-I have this feeling that they’re just trying to reassure me (Impostor syndrome I hope). The guilt with every glucometer shot eats me up inside. Psychological stability is a huge deal when you live with diabetes.
Mental and emotional will parallel physical stress. Ironman is VERY physically and mentally stressful. I have a simp,e rule calculation help but knowing my triggers and avoiding them …… yes even on vacation. No is not the worse word in the world. I hope you embrace the learning experience.
I'm sticking with the G6 until the bums at Dexcom put the G7 on an Android watch. Cannot believe the SOBs at Dexcom only has the Apple watch on the G7. They are telling half the diabetics to go F off. I am also looking at moving over to the Abbott Freestyle just to stick it to Dexcom. But the Abbott idiots don't have their sensors going directly to a watch.
Thanks
Why are you switching back to MDI given your success with the pump? (Apologies if you explained this before.)
Totally a fair question! Honestly, it's because I just want simplicity for a moment and to give my standard pump sites a break to heal the scar tissue
@ oh, that’s so interesting. I started using a tSlim pump about 2.5 yrs ago, placing infusion sets only on my abdomen, but recently my skin keeps bruising. I never mastered MDI so am reluctant to switch, but good to know I could!
Wow!!! Very interesting!! I’ve always believed that our mouths and bodies are directly involved w each other. This doesn’t surprise me and it makes perfect sense!!! Thank you for sharing this info!!!
Yes Ive been doing that since I heard about it. Many thanks from Canada 🇨🇦
I would like to hear more about dosing! Thanks!
As a Dental Hygienist I found this episode super enlightening. Thanks Matt for asking great questions
Interesting.. never heard this before. I eat more on low carb side..so I am a bit lower than that
i would like part 2
It's funny I'm on MDI and I can't imagine using a pump. The thought of a needle always embedded in your skin, with how sensitive my skin is, I think I'll always be using MDI.
I used to think the exact same thing! So funny haha, though honestly - to each their own, I respect it. Are you using the InPen? If not, I highly recommend it for MDI
@@FTFWARRIOR I'm using the HumaPen Savvio.
Need a part 2 please.
what a self important ego! just use a pump & cgm.... all you say is taken care effortlessly. you are very misleading...as if you have found the secret physicans are too stupid to figure out. every diabetic T1 should be seen reguraly by an endo & read up from reputable sources... and not his book as he is not a Dr.
I’m at 97% but for just 3 days, and really excited! It’s my best and highest score yet. Man, it’s hard though! 👍
That's awesome still! It's definitely tricky, what's working for you?
@@FTFWARRIOR Well, I’m 56 and have been T1 since I was 3. I was blessed with no issues until about 2 years ago when things have just become increasingly challenging. I have to credit the technology with what works, or helps me the most. First the Dexcom CGM, and then I recently switched from the Medtronic pump to the Tandem X2 slim. I still have to pay close attention during the day, but the control IQ allows me to sleep through the night since it can keep up with the slight adjustments overnight. I got to 99% in range the other day, but tried to jump on a 70 low and you, it spiked and now I’m back at 97! 🤷♂️😂👍 Thank you!
The danger in a low is also immediate, not just the uncomfortable feelings. The highs are dangerous if continued over a prolonged period of time, leading to ketosis, at its worst, or other long term health problems.
Insulin, itself, doesn’t cause weight gain. That’s a ridiculous assertion because that would mean that those who are not diabetic and have their own insulin are obesity-prone. Many type 1 diabetics, when initially diagnosed, have had unexplained weight loss as a result of what elevated blood sugars does to their body. At the time of diagnosis, many have a lot of lost fat and muscle weight. Once insulin therapy has begun and blood sugars begin to stabilize, the newly diagnosed type 1 diabetic will experience an increase in appetite initially, which helps to restore the lost weight and normalizing or somewhat normalizing blood sugars don’t give way to the weight loss highly elevated blood sugars do. Diabetic or not, calorie control and cardiovascular exercise are, by and large, what help to control a person’s body fat composition. It’s not rocket science either way. Sadly, people come up with every excuse in the world to become and stay overweight.
Need to see part 2 and 3 and 4
I agree. Everything you suggested more info on would be EXCELLENT !!
More about Insulin to carb and Protein formulas please!
The book is amazing. That’s all.. simple amazing. Thank you Matt
Yes, part 2 PLEASE!
Started the book - yes to part 2. Thanks!
Thank you some good clarification even after reding your book. Part 2 would be awesome. I am looking forward to your App 🤔
Yes, part 2 would be great! Thxs
Very interested to hear Part 2. When I was diagnosed, I was given a needle to practice injecting into an orange, then I was sent home from the hospital with the only instruction, "Don't eat too much"!! We've come a long way .
part 2 please
Everything you say is of interest Matt 👍🏼 keep sharing you knowledge Mate 🙏🏼 we need all the help you can give, Thank you !
Would be very interested in more than on this
I am type 2 and my daughter is type 1...... thank you
I have a toddler who got diagnosed at almost 31 months and there is a general pediatric endocrinologist working with us. In my experience, it takes A LOT of trial and error before you get anything going as far as T1D goes and each individual is different depending on so many factors (i.e., age, weight, overall health prior to diagnosis, living circumstances, lifestyle, etc.) Nothing with T1D is set in stone for anyone to know for sure what will work and when. My daughter was diagnosed while in DKA with a blood sugar of 533. She had a honeymoon period 4 weeks following her diagnosis, then we had to discontinue all insulin for 48 hours to avoid all the lows she was dipping into. Then we went up high all over again averaging up into the 250s and now we are averaging 175 three months following diagnosis. Due to matters like insurance, costs, and the lack of available specialists in one's area, people can't always change their doctor, but T1D patients have to be vigilant in letting their doctor know when something is or IS NOT working so that no stone is left unturned in treating the disease. T1D forces those who live with it to evaluate every single day before their doctor even gets around to it. Daily results build up on each other and add up to long-term results. No result in T1D will be an isolated result because it is not a simple health condition. There is no break from it. However, knowing that, it is possible to live a long and fulfilling life with it.
Part two please!!!!
I would love for you to comment more in this area. Love listening to your videos thanks for sharing!
Part 2 please
I would love to see part 2 I am very tone to very Low blood sugar after dinner but prone to high with dawning effect. Does your. Formula work for such problems . I have had diabetes since 4.5 and I am 62. Would this work for me? Thanks I have book on audible thanks
Glad to hear part 2 would be helpful, and the lows are NEVER fun (I hate them), though highs are equally frustrating. Most of my clients have a similar story, and are around the same age and these methods work perfectly for them - I'd recommend starting with this introduction to our methods: diabetesinaction.com
My wife is 76 and she is T1 Very up and down expecally the lows at night.. she gained 30 lbs and is looking for something... Is she compatible with this for her age? Edit: also she has a t-slim pump, so is this work with her pump?
Ahh ya, the lows are NEVER fun (I hate them), though the weight gain can be equally frustrating. Most of my clients have a similar story, and are around the same age and these methods work perfectly for them - I'd recommend starting with this introduction to our methods: diabetesinaction.com
